Grant money is relied upon by colleges and universities to expand their campuses and their educational offerings. Public and private institutions this year have received millions of dollars in grants that are to be put toward student scholarships, community services and more. Some of the money is to be put toward healthcare initiatives, while others are to go toward international business, entrepreneurship and arts-related offerings and more. Medicine and dentistry are the focus at Kirksville, Mo.-based AT Still University as far as its Health Resources and Services Administration grants are concerned. AT Still University received $5.86 million-plus in grants from the agency, an announcement from the institution in October noted. According to the announcement, AT Still University plans to spend a portion of the money at its Arizona facilities, including a workforce development effort at its School of Dentistry & Oral Health and, at its School of Osteopathic Medicine, on a new department of family and community medicine.

In Kirksville, the money is to benefit instruction and more at AT Still University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and a workforce development initiative at the institution’s School of Health Management. AT Still University plans to put additional Health Resources and Services Administration grant money toward classroom resources and technology. At the University of Arizona in Tempe, Ariz., a $43.4 million US Department of Education grant is to help with statewide school reform, which includes a performance-based pay component for teachers. An Arizona Ready-for-Rigor effort designed to enhance education in the state is being led by the University of Arizona as well as the Arizona Department of Education and a schools network known as the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching. The Department of Education provided this Teacher Incentive Fund Grant to Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.

The grant was announced by Arizona State University in October, a time when the institution also announced receipt of $1 million from state Governor Jan Brewer. This $1 million is to be used by the institution to establish a program that would help students, faculty members and are companies establish or enhance entrepreneurial ventures. The program, known as Venture Catalyst, would be based at Arizona State University’s Scottsdale Innovation Center and would include mentoring and group training components, according to the institution.

Another US Department of Education grant went to Lisle, Ill.-based Benedictine University.  This particular grant is a Title VI Business and International Education Program Grant that provides for more than $188,000 over the course of two years. With the grant money, the College of Business at Benedictine University plans to create a web portal through which businesses would be able to interact with the education community and international organizations. In addition to training business professionals on an international level in this manner, the university also would put money toward travel abroad scholarships. It’s all about the arts as far as an $80,000 grant to Boston University is concerned. This grant, the largest provided to the institution by the National Endowment for the Arts, is to help pay artists-in-residence salaries and student scholarships for Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute. During summers, gifted high school musicians receive training at the institute.

Students might not receive grants such as these directly. Yet they often benefit when the money is used for scholarships and for programming that helps train them for their futures. When colleges and universities institute programs that benefit the community at large, grant money goes even farther, as the grants provided this year demonstrate.

Let’s start off with the rock cycle

Current theory states that the earth has an inner core and an outer core. On top of the outer core is the biggest area called the mantle. The last layer is the atmosphere. The lithosphere, or crust, is broken up into plates called tectonic plates. Some of the plates spread apart from each other, and some of the mantle comes up into the lithosphere, hardens, and forms new crust. Some of the plates come together and parts of the plates are subducted back into the mantle.

This forming of new crust and destruction of old crust is what powers the rock cycle, and creates the first type of rocks: igneous.

Igneous

Newly formed rocks are called igneous rocks. Igneous means “it came from fire.” Igneous rocks are formed by cooling magma, or lava, which comes from the mantle of the earth.

Rocks are classified by their origin or how they are formed.

There are two kinds of igneous rocks. Some of the rocks are formed and cooled under the earth. Others are formed on top of the earth and in contact with air.

Little by little, over thousands or millions of years, sediments collect layer-by-layer, forming thick deposits on land or on the sea floor. These layers are pressed down more and more through time, until the bottom layers slowly turn into rock. This process is known as lithification (lithos being the Greek word for “stone”). A unique feature about sedimentary rocks is the fact that they tend to be laid down in layers, known as strata. Examples of sedimentary rocks are: sandstone, gypsum, limestone, shale, and conglomerate. The scientific study of these rocks assists humans in the quest to know more about the earth’s history, and about the naturally processes which have shaped the earth.

Igneous rocks are formed when volcanoes erupt, causing the magma to rise above the earth’s surface. When magma appears above the earth, it is called lava. Igneous rocks are formed as the lava cools above ground. They are also formed when the melted rock, (called magma), becomes trapped deep within the earth in small pockets. As these pockets of magma cool, they become igneous rocks. The solidification process is very complex. There are different ranges of melting temperatures for the magma. The minerals with the highest melting points will crystallize first and their crystal growth continue as long as the surrounding material remains molten. Depending upon the surroundings and the rate of cooling, a great variety of igneous rocks can be formed. When crystallization is complete, the result is a solid mass of interlocking crystals of different sizes. The most abundant types of igneous rocks are granite and basalt.

The original rock does not melt. The elements in the minerals can actually form new minerals. The new rocks that develop are called metamorphic rock.

Because they are on the crust, they cool quickly and are fine-grained. Crystals haven’t had time to form. Basalt is formed by the extrusive process.

Intrusive rocks cool below the surface, inside of the earth’s crust. Since they’re not exposed to air, they cool much slower than extrusive rocks. This slow cooling time gives crystals time to form and intrusive rocks have a coarser grain.

Project-based teaching engages promotes a meaningful and relevant learning environment for students. Students in project-based environments are motivated and involved learners. In order to nurture a deeper sense of learning, teachers should use guided inquiry and trans-disciplinary approach. It is essential that teachers focus on the work of students and cultivate their learning by concentrating on relevant issues, concepts, ideas, and even questions and problems. A project-based approach helps students learn important content, develop intellectual capacities and acquire essential skills, from calculating to collaborating.

The project-based approach to teaching creates for students the need and desire to learn essential content and skills. Project-based learning begins with a vision for a product that requires learning specific knowledge, skills and concepts, thus creating a context and rationale to study the information and ideas. Learning content across disciplines creates context for students, which results in a much higher level of understanding than that attained through traditional teaching of subject areas in isolation.

Project-oriented learning requires the curiosity to discover or create new knowledge and understanding. Inquiry and curiosity will oblige the students to explore new ideas, consider their options, solve problems and share what they have to learn. They should work together and be critical and apply problem solving techniques. Students need to do much more than remember information—they need to construct knowledge, develop understanding and solve complex problems wile working together in a team. Students should be able to listen to each other, express their own thoughts, and present projects properly.

One of the several advantages of project based learning is providing a voice and a choice for students. When students are given this level of freedom to make decisions, they get taught to work independently and take responsibility for their own work. Project-based teaching also promotes feedback and revision, where students are allowed to throw constructive criticisms at each other’s work. In the end, students present their results publicly. The process of preparing and delivering a project presentation in and of itself is a significant learning experience for students.

At the end of the day, the projects are coherent and congruent with the curriculum. The content of projects typically includes several disciplines and multiple skills. Students gain a deep understanding of the concepts that are central to the project. Students also develop other necessary skills from different skill areas based on the project that they are working on. Projects also foster and an enduring love for learning. With project-based learning, teachers can encourage students to tackle global and local issues, explore interests and build their own, interact with adults from different fields, use educational technology, and present their work to people outside the classroom. The benefits that students can get from project-based learning don’t stop in the classroom, but also create a life-changing impact on the students’ lives outside school.
