Entertainment-Based Learning – Lessons Made Easier Through Fun Games

Incorporating play to education is not a novel concept. It runs along the same line as the time-tested concept of Edutainment. As the portmanteau suggests, Edutainment is the delivery of educational material via an activity which the learner considers enjoyable. By making the learning experience more enjoyable, it is posited that retention is highly likely.

There are a wide range of Edutainment options applicable to childhood education. First would be through film and television programming. Between the two, edutainment is more evident in the latter. There are several shows on TV which quiz kids about the alphabet, numbers, simple arithmetic, telling time, and good manners. In some countries, recorded shows are often integrated into lessons with the teacher using it as a complement to classroom discussions.

Books, guided tours of zoological parks, and play are also widely used edutainment options. Among these, learn-by-play is deemed very effective because it engages the young learner at the same time develops the child’s cognitive, social and physical facets. Role playing in a kindergarten class for example is a very creative way to teach them about professionals like doctors, nurses, police officers, and firefighters. Pretend and play can also teach them about common chores like cleaning, putting away groceries, and caring for their younger siblings. Grouping them and having a Quiz using picture flash cards not only fosters competitiveness among children but also helps them make image to word associations.

For kindergarten and school age children, board games gives them the opportunity to further hone their social skills and strategy. The proliferation of online quizzes and quest like games give us a good idea that computing and the Internet has successfully penetrated the industry.
