How The Uniform Plumbing Code Has Shaped The Industry Today

In prior years, the plumbing business didn’t have set standards or codes to follow and therefore was performed in many different ways when dealing with businesses or residences. In fact, up until 1926, it could be a real dice roll when a plumber or plumbing inspector showed up to try and do his job. The Uniform Plumbing Code was not in existence at this time allowing everyone free reign as to how they wanted to perform their plumbing. As you might imagine, this lead to incredible levels of chaos, and disease was able to spread rapidly due to the poor sanitation that existed when there was no way to be able to keep things consistent and adhere to the best practices to get the job done right. Plumbing, however, is meant to improve one’s life and not harm it. Plumbing inspectors got together in those early days and decided that they would form an organization called the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials. The resulting Uniform Plumbing Code became a publication that is now an American National Standard. It has helped to guide plumbing professionals in a uniform way for all to benefit from.

Since we now have these kinds of guidelines, there are many reasons to turn to it. The Uniform Plumbing Code was able to set the standard for the industry and helped to align the way that plumbing professionals perform their work. The information found inside is consensus based, which means that volunteers help to improve the code constantly by adding in what they learn while working in their fields. The purpose of this kind of publication is to help make plumbing safer for the public by keeping things uniform and helping to ensure that the best practices are followed in order to create a better world through plumbing, so to speak. The Uniform Plumbing Code is available to anyone who would like to review it and has also helped to regulate many sanitation and health standards. These set standards are coveted by the plumbing industry because it provides stability to the industry as well as sets the way for inspections.

One thing is for sure and that is, it would be tough to imagine a world where this publication did not exist. It might be possible, but the fact that this publication is out there certainly does make things simpler and more intuitive for those that want to work for people, not profits alone.
