There are many common misconceptions about sex and pregnancy, from myths about positions to the life span of sperm. Many people think that even without a condom, there are ways they can avoid becoming pregnant, or that they might become pregnant without even having sex; some of these ideas are true, some partially so, and others totally false.Read on to get the facts about these concerns.A doctor is always required if you have pregnancy symptoms or pregnancy exercises.
Common concerns
What if I was on my period? You may still get pregnant; sperm can live up to seven days inside the vagina, most often if fertile cervical fluid is present.
But, I didn’t have an orgasm? An orgasm is simply a physical (if pleasurable) response to certain sexual activity, and while it may seem that the increased blood flow and lubrication of the orgasm would increase fertility, it really has no effect on sperm’s ability to travel through the vagina. There is no relationship between orgasm and ovulation; if one did cause the other, then you couldn’t even have your period without having an orgasm first. An Dr. is forever called for if you have tubal pregnancy symptoms.
What happens if I was on top?Your fertile egg can be easily reached by sperm traveling through the vagina, even “against” gravity. It makes no difference if you were on top – it is possible to become pregnant as long as ejaculation occurs within or near the vagina.
What if I was a virgin?Although you may have heard otherwise – it does not matter if it was your first time, or even if your hymen was unbroken – you can still get pregnant. As long as there is a fertile egg and sperm can gain access to it – you can get pregnant.
What if the sperm is exposed to air?Sperm aren’t killed just by coming into contact with the air; in order to survive, sperm need a moist environment.Sperm cells do not require being within the body to survive; even if exposed to air, the cells will survive as long as they are moist.
What happens to sperm in a hot tub or pool? Some people are afraid they could become pregnant by being a pool or hot tub that someone has ejaculated in.In this case, the temperature of the hot tub and the chlorine in the pool kill the sperm immediately, leaving no cause for concern.
What if we have sex in a shower, hot tub, pool, or other water.? YES. If actual intercourse with penetration takes place, the sperm have easy access to the vaginal canal and can fertilize an egg, just as if you were having sex in a bed.
How can I avoid becoming pregnant?
A simple guideline (though not foolproof) to avoiding pregnancy is not to engage in any sexual activity that leads to ejaculate contacting the woman’s body in the area between the bellybutton and the thighs. Remember, sperm can survive for days, both in and outside the vagina.
If you want to enjoy all the variety sexual activity has to offer, AND avoid becoming pregnant, the best and obvious choice is to consistently use protection (condoms) and/or some form of birth control.
