Many people may feel Spanish is difficult if they’re not comfortable with learning languages. Maybe someone told you to begin with Spanish as it’s easiest to learn. Actually, most languages are easy to learn. You just need to determine what learning tricks you’ll be using. A lot of helpful tips are available so learning Spanish won’t feel difficult. You can give these tricks a try:

Try to remember to have some patience. You won’t be speaking Spanish fluently in several days. You could have all your vocabulary and verb conjugations memorized. But you’ll still probably have trouble making sentences. You will only slow your progress if you put a lot of pressure on your self to get fluent fast. Rather, just learn at a natural pace. This allows you to feel more relaxed with Spanish. If people know you’re learning their language, when you talk to them they’ll be more patient with you. You need to be careful so you don’t offend anyone.

Try to make yourself think in Spanish as much as possible. Whenever you catch yourself thinking about anything, make the effort to translate whatever it is into Spanish. Take your time and learn how to do this at your own pace. Everyone has a certain amount of “mental chatter” in their heads; when you notice this, think how the words would translate into Spanish. Like any skill, you can become better at it the more you try it. The more you do it, the more quickly your mind will be able to convert words into the new language. You will know you have mastered this when you find that you sometimes think in the new language when you aren’t even intending. Of course, you also want to say some of these thoughts out loud, so your ability to speak improves as well.

Flashcards, which you might recall from your school days, can be useful to use when learning a language. This may seem very simple, but it works well. They can help you memorize words, one of the most basic and most crucial areas of building your language skills. Don’t just use them for simple objects, but also for grammar, remembering the different tenses and other aspects of learning the language. Carry flashcards with you to work, if you take a train, bus or plane or wherever you go. Use them with someone else and let them quiz you sometimes. All you have to do is use one side for Spanish and the other for your first language; it’s that easy!

There’s no reason that speaking another language has to be hard or complicated. If you don’t yet have a second language, Spanish is a good one to start with, because it’s relatively easy. There are so many different language courses, programs and systems available today. You don’t have to try something that doesn’t feel right to you; figure out which system seems best for you. It becomes much easier to learn when you find a teacher, course or system that really appeals to you. If your goal is to speak Spanish fluently, just keep at it and don’t be impatient, and you will gradually get there!
