It was like most nights…that night of three September 2010. By 4.35 am it was something but usual as Cantabrians have been awoken with a loud exploding noise followed by violent shaking and loud roaring noises. My warning to you: Get prepared every person for a natural disaster…
Natural disasters have been producing headlines every week lately, and there is no relief in sight. There have been floods, mudslides, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunami’s, wildfires, blizzards… you just cannot seem to escape them! People that discover themselves inside the middle of one of these disasters normally have their lives fully devastated.
With extra and additional natural disasters occurring about the globe which include earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, drought, severe snow storms, bushfires and cyclones it seems nobody is immune. Finding ready for a natural disaster can be a will need to as we knowledge altering and extreme climate patterns.
You all know the drill, I’m sure, as Governments try to prepare us for any disasters ahead. There is the compulsory stocking of tinned food, water, torches, batteries, plans of action, your own emergency drill. The point is, do we do all these items or just believe ‘I’ll be right’? I am about to speak to you about information garnered from my own expertise of the September four earthquake of magnitude 7.1 in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.
It does not must be that way for you and your family. There are many vital actions that you simply can do to aid make sure your households disaster preparedness.
With the power off and no water it was brought household having a thump just how lax you can in fact be when preparing for events for example this. Unlike others we were fortunate that these necessary facilities have been back in spot by 1.00 pm that day.
Rule one: Have bottled water handy.
Yes, we did have a few bottles of water but unquestionably not adequate for such an emergency. The initial plan of action was then to gather any water that was still in the pipe system…filling bottles and buckets as far as possible. When the water was back on the next thing to do was to fill the bath in case of a different cut. In situation the aftershock budged the plug and the water was lost I placed a heavy pan over the plug hole. As I mentioned we have been lucky as others have been without water for a lot longer. And yes, we now have a supply of bottled water.
A great place to start when creating a disaster strategy is always to discover just what disasters it is possible to expect within your location and ways to ideal prepare for them. Every city, family, and dwelling has distinct threats, needs, and assets.
Rule two: Have enough batteries to replace your torch and radio etc…and of the appropriate type.
Once again there was a distinct lack in this area. A note here: those LED torches are helpful to have. We now have 1 on every side of the bed and when close friends come to stay they have their own by their bed.
Rule three: Keep your cellular phone charged.
Either preserve an old style telephone to plug into the jack-point or constantly have your mobile phone with a very good charge.
