The first person that you will meet with when you go to the emergency room will be the triage nurse. The triage nurse will assess your health concerns and address them accordingly. This can be considered triage consulting and needs to be done with the utmost care.

There are many different faces and responsibilities when it comes to triage nursing. Whether you are a telephone traige nurse or an emergency room triage nurse, you must rely on training and experience to decipher the patient’s condition.

Triage nurses must have excellent listening skills in order to give the best advice possible. A triage telephone nurse will not be able to diagnose you over the phone but, will be able to point you in the right direction. They also have to be able to work without the supervision of a nurse manager.

A nursing manager has many different responsibilities. They not only have to oversee all of the triage nurses in the hospital, they also have to watch over all of the nurses that are working the floor, keep up on all of the reports that need to be done and check in on the nurses that are working from home.

On top of all of the issues and strains from managing a full staff, they will also have to work with the daily pressures of patient care both inpatient and outpatient as well as all of the rules and regulations that are ever changing in the hospital field. A nursing manager has to be sensitive to the needs of the staff which includes those that are seasoned professionals and those that are new to the crew.

If you are considering the field of nursing, whether it is a triage nurse or a nursing manager, you will need to go through extensive training for either position. Granted, different responsibilities come with both jobs but, the bottom line is the patient care.
